The Police reúne 11 mil em Londres na volta do grupo...

O tempo parece ter parado para a banda The Police. E para o Sting também. De volta aos palcos depois de mais de 20 anos separados, o vocalista e baixista Sting, o guitarrista Andy Summers e o baterista Stewart Copeland - a formação clássica do The Police - seguem em turnê mundial com o Reunion Tour e, na noite de anteontem, fizeram show em sua terra natal, Londres, para um público estimado em 11 mil pessoas, na Wembley Arena. Em ação, o trio demonstra o mesmo entrosamento dos velhos tempos e o cinqüentão Sting, uma invejável boa forma e a capacidade de usar a voz ao seu bel prazer. Fisicamente, Copeland também envelheceu bem, Andy, nem tanto, mas o tempo ajudou o trio a aprimorar sua técnica, como eles próprios reconhecem. "As músicas têm de se desenvolver. Vinte anos mais tarde, temos de ser melhores músicos", afirmou Sting.

No concerto em Londres, tudo funcionou pontualmente, a começar pela abertura dos portões. Tudo muito calmo, muito civilizado. Às 21 horas, o motivo de todas as cerca de 11 mil pessoas terem saído de suas casas naquele sábado congelante estava lá, diante delas, ao vivo, no palco. The Police, o retorno. Sting, Andy e Copeland engataram, de cara, dois sucessos, 'Message in a Bottle' e 'Synchronicity II'. Depois, Sting fez as honras, apresentando os já manjados músicos da banda e conclamou o público a levantar as mãos e cantar o resto do show. Veio o indefectível reggae 'Walking on the Moon', 'Voices Inside My Head', 'Don''t Stand So Close', outro reggae thepoliciano, e uma seqüência de menos badaladas: 'Driven To Tears', 'Hole in My Life' e 'Truth Hits Everybody' (essas duas últimas, tiradas do primeiro álbum de estúdio do trio, 'Outlandos d'Amour'). E no meio de 'Hole in My Life', Sting brincou de improvisar o refrão de 'Hit the Road, Jack'.

Depois dos hits 'Magic', 'Wrapped Around Your Finger' e 'De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da', o trio reforçou seu lado engajado em músicas como 'Invisible Sun' (de 1981, sobre as tensões na Irlanda do Norte). Mas o repertório foi pensado mesmo para satisfazer novos e velhos fãs e, nesse balaio, vieram ainda 'Can't Stand Losing You', 'King of Pain' (em que Copeland experimentou uma pequena parafernália percussiva), ''So Loney' e, claro, 'Roxanne' e 'Every Breath You Take', pontos altos da noite. A banda encerrou o show, 1h30 depois, com Sting cantando 'Next to You', enquanto uma seqüência de imagens de Andy era exibida no telão.

Estava estampada nas caras de Sting, Andy e Copeland a felicidade de estar de volta ao palco, juntos, como The Police. A reunião celebra os 30 anos de formação do grupo e teve início na apresentação no Grammy Awards 2007, em fevereiro. O anúncio da turnê, para a surpresa geral, veio no dia seguinte. The Police Reunion Tour começou no Canadá, em maio, e passou por outras cidades da América no Norte. Segue agora pela Europa e percorrerá ainda Japão, Argentina, Austrália, entre outros países, até início de 2008. No Brasil, a banda se apresenta no dia 8 de dezembro, no Maracanã, no Rio.

There were quite a few men with their hands wriggling in their pockets throughout The Police's final concert of their European tour.

And it wasn't because Sting was looking well ripped in tight black jeans and white moth-eaten tank top. Although he was. Very much so.

They were just checking the Rugby scores, which, for obvious reasons stopped after about the tenth song.

The only giveaway that the Rugby was being played was the fluro glow coming from hundreds of phones being checked around the arena. But, other than that, it was business as usual.

The mostly older crowd (lets face it, they're the only ones able to afford the £90 tickets) were expecting a belting trip down memory lane, which a tea-drinking Sting, Andy Summers and Stuart Copeland delivered, with some help from a vocal audience.

The flawless set covered 'Message in a Bottle', 'Walking on the Moon', 'Don't Stand So Close to Me', 'Hole in My Life', 'Every Little Thing', and 'Da Do Do Do'.

A ramped up 'I Can't Stand Losing You' electrified the crowd, and standout version of 'Roxanne', complete with wild red stage lighting, really showed off the trio's still powerful and tireless talents.

Copeland seemed to have a ball on a high-tech scaffold percussion setup, which rose from the rear of the stage, and Summers played up to the audience, jumping around and teasing Sting. The 56-year-old front-man got his own back by standing on Summers' foot during two encores which featured 'King of Play' (sic), 'So Lonely' and a brilliant 'Every Breath you Take'.

Some of the songs were drawn out and extended more than was probably necessary, but considering the band was only together for six years 20 years ago, and produced some of the most peerless pop songs in the world, you can hardly blame them for trying to do things a little differently.

Sting still has that stage presence and incredible voice that got them to the top of the charts, and the crowd's enthusiastic response to his promise that "We'll see you again soon" leaves me in no doubt that tickets for the next tour will sell-out as well.
